On a dreary autumn day in 1818, notorious pirate Hyppolite de Bouchard sailed his ships into Monterey Bay intent on burning Santa Cruz to the ground. Legend says that a free-spirited brewer stole aboard one of the ships, offering the pirate casks of his special ale to leave in peace.
