The Chivas Regal Story
Chivas Regal was launched in 1909, a 25 year old luxury blend created for the sophisticated palates of America's East Coast high society. There had never been a whisky like it. Such was its success that, within months, demand outstripped supply. And then fate, in the form of World War I and the Prohibition era, intervened. Chivas Regal 25 Year Old disappeared from view, to become a highly sought-after collector's item.

The Birth of a 25 Year Old
Chivas has always been a byword for excellence. It was the benchmark set by James and John Chivas, whose shop in 19th century Aberdeen was an emporium of good taste, catering for the refined requirements of the nobility. Queen Victoria, residing at nearby Balmoral Castle, was a valued customer.

In time, the business passed into the hands of Alexander Smith and his master blender Charles Howard. Together they continued the Chivas brothers' quest for the perfect whisky blend, drawing on the company's unique and priceless stock of fine aged single malts and grain whiskies. Finally, in 1909, their ambition was triumphantly fulfilled. They called the 25 year old blend Chivas Regal.

A Meteoric Success
In the first decade of the 20th century America was booming, and nowhere more so than the city of New York. For those in high society there were the theatrical attractions of Broadway, the glittering milieu of the grand hotels, the endless round of lavish parties. On to this scene, in 1909, burst Chivas Regal.

The impact made by the 25 year old blended whisky, soon to be proudly displaying a Royal Warrant, could hardly have been greater. From New York to Chicago, Chivas Regal 25 Year Old became the fashionable tipple of the elite. Top hotels and restaurants pleaded for further supplies, promising to restrict sales to their most discerning and distinguished patrons.

The Blender's Masterpiece

The challenge for Colin Scott, the Chivas master blender, was a formidable one: "To produce a whisky that would redefine the word luxurious, just as the first Chivas Regal did a century ago."
