Glenmorangie 'Tusail' Private Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ml

Manufacturer's Notes: Glenmorangie TUSAIL (Gaelix for originary) is an artisanal single malt, hand-crafted using floor-malted MARIS OTTER BARLEY. The result is a bright ochre whisky, with rich, rustic flavours of nut toffee, sweet barley malt and ginger, complementing more familiar Glenmorangie notes.

Maris Otter
In 1965, the craft brewing landscape would forever be changed with the introduction of Maris Otter, a winter barley variety of legendary status. Bred specifically to meet the demand for a high quality brewing malt and recognized for its ability to impart rich, rustic malty flavours, it would soon become the cornerstone ingredient of many of England's most revered cask-conditioned ales. Despite flourishing as such for years, it would eventually fall out of flavour; as new higher-yielding breeds entered the market, few could resist the move to lower cost alternatives, seemingly cementing the fate of the once lauded variety.

Unparalleled Character
As years went on and the supply of Maris Otter dwindled to a trickle, a small group of loyal proponents hatched a plan to secure the variety's future for use by the few who continued to sacrifice yield for quality. Using carefully-selected purebred plants, they began propagating the revered breed under closly-monitored conditions, slowly rebuilding a limited foundation stock of unparalleled character. As news of the variety's rejuvenation spread, many took note; among them, Dr. Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's celebrated Director of Whisky Creation and Distilling. Dong recognised for his pioneering work with rare and unique casks, it was his experimentation with malted barley that ultimately led to his greatest creation, Glenmorangie Signet. With that in mind, inspired by a shared ethos for quality over yield and recognising that the hardy winter variety would be the perfect ingredient to achieve a deep, rich flavour profile unlike Glenmorangie's more delicate house style, Dr. Bill set off to secure a parcel of Maris Otter.

Looking to bring out the most of the variety's renowned taste profile, Dr. Bill arranged to have the parcel of Maris Otter barley floor-malted by hand using traditional techniques, then distilled a batch of new make spirit and laid it away into a handful of carefully selected casks. These he tucked away into a quiet corner of his vabinet of curiosities to begin their slow journey towards maturation. The result, Glenmorangie Tusail (Scots Gaelic for originary), is an artisanal single malt paying homage to the Maris Otter variety; a bright ochre whisky with rich, rustic flavours of nut toffee, sweet barley malt, ginger, cinnamon, molasses, and dates, complementing more familiar Glenmorangie notes of peaches, oranges and smoked pears. A whisky celebrating he legacy of Maris Otter, and all of those who continue to sacrifice yield for quality in their constant pursuit of perfection.
